Vous regardez actuellement The deal is made in Cannes. The journey isn’t.

This week the industry lands in Cannes for TFWA World Exhibition & Conference — the show where Hermès, Chanel, Estée Lauder, Moët Hennessy and hundreds of other brands sign the deals that get written up as “the year in travel retail.” Every one of those deals covers a single moment: the duty-free airport shelf — not the tax-free purchases the same traveller makes days later.

But the affluent traveller Cannes is built around doesn’t only shop at the airport. The same person browses duty-free on the way to their gate, and days later walks into a boutique in Milan’s Quadrilatero della Moda or at La Vallée Village outside Paris — tax-free, receipt in hand for a VAT refund on the way home. Duty-free and tax-free are two different mechanisms, not two names for the same thing: duty-free is exempt at the point of sale, bought airside, mid-journey, before you’ve technically arrived anywhere; tax-free is reclaimed afterwards, for shopping done once someone has actually landed and is out in the destination. Most media plans are built to reach one of the two. Here’s the case for reaching both, across the five moments that sit either side of them.

The five moments of the travel retail journey, with duty-free (travel and transit) and tax-free (arrive and shop) highlighted

Launching This Month

Introducing the Echolution Duty Free Index

Alongside this issue, we’re launching the Echolution Duty Free Index — a live pricing tool that sources products from duty-free retailers at airports around the world and compares what the same item costs from one airport to the next. It launches with an initial set of categories, with more added in the coming months.

01 — Dream & research

Three-quarters of duty-free shoppers plan their purchases before they travel — but fewer than one in five recall seeing any brand touchpoint before departure (Duty Free World Council). Intent is forming weeks out, and almost nobody is speaking into it.

02 — Book & confirm

A confirmed booking is a media brief, not just a data point: it tells you who’s travelling, where, and when, with months of runway to sequence a message before anyone reaches an airport.

03 — Travel & transit — the duty-free moment

This is where duty-free actually lives: airside, past security, mid-journey. The window is shrinking — Asia Pacific dwell times fell 16% between 2018 and 2024, leaving roughly 40 free minutes once check-in and boarding are accounted for (Kearney) — which is exactly why the cabin has become part of the same moment: 7 in 10 airlines now offer inflight Wi-Fi (Moment), reaching a traveller who has nowhere else to look.

04 — Arrive & shop — the tax-free moment

This is a different traveller in a different mindset: landed, out in the destination, shopping on the high street or at an outlet village rather than in a terminal. It’s also where our other clients sit — the premium retailers and outlet destinations serving inbound tourism aren’t competing for airport shelf space, they’re competing for this moment. Geofenced, location-triggered mobile campaigns aimed at exactly this kind of arrival produce a 4.39% click-through rate versus 0.7% for standard digital-out-of-home (Solomon Partners).

05 — Return & beyond

The show closes on 1 October; the commercial opportunity doesn’t. Retargeted shoppers are roughly 70% more likely to convert than first-time visitors (Search Lab) — and it’s tax-free and duty-free transaction data together that make that retargeting specific rather than generic.

What Echolution does

Echolution is an independent media agency built specifically to reach the affluent international traveller — whether that’s a duty-free shopper airside at Heathrow, or the same person three days later browsing tax-free in Milan. We plan and buy across inflight, airport and out-of-home using flight, booking and location data most generalist agencies never touch, and we work as naturally with high-street and outlet retailers serving inbound tourism as we do with the operators exhibiting in Cannes this week.

If you’re in Cannes this week, or you sell to the same traveller on the high street, tell us your brands and your markets and we’ll show you the full journey in action.
